Frequently Asked Questions

 

 

 

1)     When are sign-ups?

*   Sign-up begin in October of each year and through Dec there is a $10  discount for early registration

*   Regular sign-ups are taken between Jan and Feb

*   Late sign-ups  are considered registrations taken between Feb & Mar  and will be assessed a $10 late fee

 

2)     What does it cost to play?

*   Tee Ball: $125

*   Rookies - Majors : $160

*       Juniors- Big League  : $180

*       Softball Minors-Majors  :$160

*       Softball Jr-Sr  : $170

 

3)     Do you offer financial assistance?

*  Yes for those in need. A confidential interview with the Player Agent is required to be considered

*   Financial Assistant: Payment plans…$85 down 2 equal monthly payments paid in full prior to opening day

*   Scholarships: Reduced fees…must be approved by league president…typically you must provide your prior years tax return or proof of unemployment.

 

4)     Other leagues charge a lower registration fees why are Oak Ridge’s fees higher?

*  Our average cost per player is approximately $250, registration fees only

    cover a portion of this total cost.

 

 

5)     What if my son or daughter decides not to play after registering and paying the fee?

*   In order to receive a refund of the registration fee, the parent/guardian of a player must submit a letter to the Board requesting a refund and stating the reason why the player is resigning. No refunds will be processed without this letter. Amount of refund will be based on the following situations. A player, who resigns, quits, dropped or is injured…

*   Prior to being assigned a team a $25 administrative fee will be charged and the remaining balance refunded.

*   No refund will be provided after a player has been assigned to a team.

 

6)     Why do I have to volunteer to do field work, umpire, or work the snack shack?

*  To make-up the difference of the cost to play and fee which we charge. Our snack shack must be run by our volunteer parents. Additionally, Oak Ridge Little League is only as strong as it’s volunteers. We can not exist without parental involvement in all aspects of running our league.

  

7)     What are the age requirements to play?

*   They must be Little League Age 4 to 18 years olds

*   Little League age is based on the following cutoff dates:

*   For Baseball: Age of player on April 30th of the current season,

*   For Softball: Age of player on Dec 31st of the previous year of the current season.

 

8)     When does the season start and end?

*  Try outs will be held the last two weeks of January with the Major and AAA

    drafts held in early February

*  Practices will begin in February or early March depending on your childs division of play

*   Regular season starts mid March

*   End of regular season is in mid June

*   For players ages 9 and above they may be selected for post-season all-star play. Postseason games start in July and play as long as they continue to win till Aug or Sept.

 

9 )  What days and times are practices?

*   Weekday pre-season practices normally start around 5pm and on weekend anytime between 9 to 5pm.

*   Normally there can be 2 to 3 practices a week during preseason, lesser when season begins.

*   Practice days, times and how many practices are up to the manager’s.  

 

10)  When and what times are games played?

*  Games are normally scheduled on Monday through Thursday and on Saturdays.

*   Weekday games start at 5:30pm (TBall at 6pm)

*   Saturday game can start anytime between 9am to 2pm.

 

 

11)  What are tryouts and draft?

*  Tryouts give the Managers an opportunity to evaluate each player. At tryouts each player will go through a series of events...out-fielding, in-fielding, batting and running.

*   After the tryouts are completed the Managers will meet to have a draft where the teams are formed.

 

12)  Who must attend tryouts?

*   All 7 year old players and older wanting to play in Rookie, AAA, Major & Junior divisions.

*   T-Ball does not tryout.

*   Returning players from Majors teams do not need to tryout as they will return to the team they were on last year

 

13)  When will I know what team my son or daughter is on?

*  The week after the last tryouts (usually mid February) teams will begin to be formed

*   The team Manager will schedule a team meeting there after soon. 

 

14)  I have two or more kids’ can they play on the same team?

*   We will make every effort to keep siblings on the same team.

*   It may not always be possible because of our age structure between leagues or the players abilities differ between each other.

*   Please talk with the Player Agent who may be able to answer more questions and come to a solution if you still have concerns.

 

15)  My son or daughter rides with a friend can they play on the same team?

*   Be sure to mention this at time of registration

*   A note will be place on the players record requesting that he or she wishes to play with a friend.

*   All effort will be made to put them on the same team especially if they are in the same league.

*   If players are in different leagues base on age and experience then this may not be possible.

*   Due to the competitiveness in the Major division such request will not be considered.

 

16)  I have a daughter who wants to play, are there many girls in the league?

*  Yes, in T-Ball and Rookie we have quite a few girls and the teams are usually formed to include equal amount of girls on each team or at least have 2 or more girls on a team.

*   All efforts will be made to balance out the teams so there would not be a team that would have to many girls or only one girl on a team.

*   Girls ages 7 and above may play either Girls Softball or Baseball.

 

17)  My daughter would like to play Softball why does she have to play Baseball?

*   Oak Ridge Little Leagues softball divisions begins at 7 up to 17 years old. Players’ ages 4 to 6 years old play in T-Ball which is an instructional league.

*   The basic concept and skills are taught in T-Ball which will prepare them for Softball when they become eligible.

*   In some instances there may not be enough girls to form a girl's softball team in which case they will be asked if they wish to play baseball.

 

18)  What equipment and uniform do I need to get?

*  Oak Ridge Little League will provide each player with a jersey and hat.

*  All male players are required to wear a supporter and cup. This is mandatory for all males playing Little League regardless of age or division

*  Players should have their own baseball glove and baseball shoes. No metal cleats are allowed in Majors and below. Baseball molded cleats are recommended but if the player already has soccer shoes they can wear those. Juniors and above may wear metal cleats.

*   The Manager will normally recommend what color pants, socks, belt and practice jersey to purchase. It is not mandatory to play in these optional uniforms but if you do purchase them chose the color the Manager recommends so that the team does look all the same.

 

19)  Do board members, managers, coaches and umpire get paid for their service?

*   NO…NO…NO…

*   No one is paid to work at Oak Ridge Little League.

*   All adults…volunteer their spare time to teach and work the our kids.

 

20)  Do you do background checks on your adult volunteers?

*  YES,   All adult volunteers go through a back ground checks before being approved as a board member, manager, coach , umpire, scorekeeper or any other adult position that have direct contact with any children.
